Waking at 3am and wondering how you will function tomorrow?

You used to sleep. Now you wake in the early hours, watch the clock and try to work out how you will get through the next day. If your sleep has changed during menopause, it may be time to look beyond the usual sleep advice.

There is a particular frustration that comes when something you once took completely for granted suddenly becomes difficult. You used to go to bed, fall asleep and get on with your life. You did not need to think about your sleep, measure it or search for ways to improve it. It was simply something your body did.

Now things may be very different. You can be exhausted when you go to bed but still find yourself awake in the early hours. Perhaps you wake at 3am and immediately start calculating how many hours of sleep you have left before you need to get up. Perhaps you wake several times during the night, find yourself too hot or lie awake with a mind that seems determined to work through everything that happened that day.

The difficult part is not simply being tired the next morning. Poor sleep can begin to affect everything around it. Concentration can require more effort, patience can become harder to find and exercise can feel like another demand on an already full day. You may find yourself reaching for more caffeine simply to get through the afternoon, only to wonder whether that is making the following night worse.

Keep the bedroom cool.
Avoid screens before bed.
Cut back on caffeine.
Try a sleep supplement.

Because sleep is something everyone needs, advice is everywhere. There is no shortage of things you could try. The problem is knowing which advice is relevant to you. If you have already tried several of these things without much improvement, another list of tips may leave you no further forward.

Before you try another solution, it helps to understand what is actually disrupting your sleep.

A different starting point

Your sleep problem is not necessarily a sleep problem.

Not every disrupted night has the same explanation, and not every sleep tip is relevant to every woman. Someone who wakes because she is overheating may need to approach her sleep differently from someone whose mind will not switch off. Someone who falls asleep easily but wakes consistently in the early hours may have a different pattern again.

Menopause can coincide with changes in sleep, but it is important not to assume that every sleep problem has the same cause. Your daily routine, stress, environment and other health factors may all deserve consideration. Sometimes persistent sleep difficulties also need assessment by a healthcare professional.

The usual way

  • Another list of sleep tips
  • Trying everything at once
  • Assuming every bad night has the same cause
  • Wondering which advice is relevant to you

The approach in this book

  • Establish your own baseline first
  • Identify what may be disrupting your sleep
  • Decide which practical steps to try first
  • Build a personal sleep protocol you can keep using

That is why Reset Your Menopause Sleep in 28 Days starts by helping you understand your own pattern before asking you to make changes.

Rather than trying everything at once, you will work through a structured approach to observing your sleep, identifying potential barriers and deciding which practical steps are worth trying first.

Exactly what you are getting

A practical plan to help you understand your sleep, one step at a time.

The purpose of a 28-day plan is not to make you change every aspect of your life in a month. It is to give you a manageable structure for finding out what may be contributing to your disrupted sleep and making changes in a sensible order.

  1. 1Establish your baselineObserve your sleep as it is now, so you have something to measure against.
  2. 2Your environment and daysWork through the bedroom and daytime habits that can influence your nights.
  3. 3Your patternConsider common patterns such as overheating, waking in the early hours and a mind that will not settle.
  4. 4Your protocolReview what you have learnt and develop a personal sleep protocol you can continue to use.

Over 80 pages, designed to be used, not just read.

The book combines explanations with practical exercises so that you can apply what you learn to your own circumstances. You will not be expected to follow every suggestion or make a dozen changes at once. The emphasis is on understanding your pattern and making informed decisions.

Meet your author

A more considered approach to women's health

I am Carol Standing, founder of Still Standing Health. I help women in menopause understand changes in their sleep, energy and health so they can make better-informed decisions about what to do next.

I am a Certified Health & Longevity Coach and Certified Supplements Coach, with more than 20 years of experience in the health and weight-loss industry. Over that time, I have seen how easy it is for people to become overwhelmed by information, advice and products, particularly when something that used to work no longer seems to help.

I wrote this book because I believe women deserve a more considered approach. Instead of being left to try one suggestion after another, they need a way to understand what may be happening, assess their options and decide which steps are worth taking.

That is the thinking behind Still Standing Health, and it is the approach I have taken in this book.

“Carol gave me a genuine understanding of how my body works and the tools to make better decisions for myself, consistently, without it feeling like a regime.”

I had been managing some significant changes at home, and after a few months I realised I was tired all the time, which was affecting my confidence and my business. In one of her posts on LinkedIn, Carol was describing exactly what I was experiencing, and it made a lot of sense. Carol made everything feel very straightforward and entirely without judgement. I stopped looking for the one thing that would fix me, and that was probably the biggest shift. Carol gave me a genuine understanding of how my body works and the tools to make better decisions for myself, consistently, without it feeling like a regime. The insights have been invaluable and I still use what I learned from her every single day. Carol knows her subject inside out, she is genuinely easy to trust, and she meets you where you are. If you have been putting your own health to one side because everything else feels more urgent, working with Carol is how you stop doing that. I would recommend her wholeheartedly.
